Sarcopenia (Muscle Loss) in Diabetes

If you are losing muscle in your Diabetes, Then know…..

Research studies have shown that Sarcopenia, a progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function is both a cause as well as more prevalent in diabetic patients. Along with other complications of diabetes, loss of muscle mass and strength results in reduced mobility, increased risks of falls and fractures and poor quality of life.

Relation between Sarcopenia and Diabetes-Type 2

The glucose released in blood after eating is mainly taken up by the skeletal muscle mass. Due to loss of skeletal mass, excess glucose remains in blood and over a period of time it could lead to type-2 diabetes.

An important function of insulin is to take glucose from blood into skeletal muscle tissue and stimulate protein synthesis. In type-2 diabetes insulin is not effective in transporting glucose from blood into skeletal muscle mass which results in sarcopenia.
